Overview

Overview: Restara Medical is developing a closed-loop, sensor-verified patient repositioning platform to prevent hospital-acquired pressure injury. Unlike current standard-of-care approaches, which document that a repositioning attempt occurred, Restara’s system verifies that the at-risk tissue was offloaded. The platform’s algorithm only credits a repositioning event when pressure, duration, and location conditions are all met simultaneously, and it produces an event-level Verified Offload Event Record (VOER) that can serve as audit-grade clinical and legal documentation.

The Problem: Hospital-acquired pressure injury affects roughly 2.5 million U.S. patients annually and contributes to an estimated 60,000 deaths each year, with the mean hospital payout per pressure-injury lawsuit reaching $1.6 million. Current standard of care relies on labor-intensive “turn team” repositioning every two hours, a process frequently missed due to staffing shortages, alongside the Braden Scale, a subjective scoring tool that identifies risk but provides no real-time physiological verification. Passive support surfaces redistribute weight but do not actively manage the sacrum, the site responsible for roughly 60% of pressure-injury treatment expense. No current product on the market closes a control loop on sacral interface pressure or produces a verified, event-level offload record.

The Solution: Restara’s system doesn’t just check whether a patient was repositioned — it confirms the repositioning actually worked. Before it credits an offload event, it has to see the pressure drop below a safe threshold for the patient, stay relieved for a sustained period, and confirm that the right spot — the tissue actually at risk — was the one addressed. The device itself combines broad, whole-body repositioning with finer, more localized adjustments, so it can relieve pressure without dragging or shearing the skin as it moves the patient through a repositioning cycle. The end result is a record that shows, event by event, that at-risk tissue was genuinely relieved — not just that someone attempted a turn.
