Overview: The global rise in obesity has created a large and growing demand for effective weight management therapies. While GLP-1 receptor agonists have demonstrated meaningful short-term weight loss, long-term outcomes remain limited, with high discontinuation rates and frequent rebound weight gain. icosiMED is developing a first-in-class oral therapy designed to deliver sustainable metabolic health by addressing the underlying mechanics of fat accumulation rather than suppressing appetite.
The Problem: Despite rapid adoption of GLP-1–based therapies, obesity remains inadequately treated over the long term. Approximately 80% of patients discontinue current treatments, often due to side effects, cost, or tolerability, and subsequently regain weight. Most existing therapies rely on appetite suppression, which can result in gastrointestinal side effects, muscle loss, and poor durability, leaving a critical unmet need for safe, sustainable weight management solutions.
The Solution: icosiMED is advancing a novel oral therapeutic that enables significant fat loss without muscle loss or appetite suppression. The drug targets a core metabolic pathway by disrupting the conversion of dietary carbohydrates into stored fat, effectively mimicking the physiological benefits of fasting without caloric deprivation. This mechanism supports durable weight management, preservation of lean muscle, increased energy, and improved overall metabolic health. Importantly, humans lacking the target gene are extremely lean, increasing the likelihood of the pre-clinical results translating to humans.
